The core concept is that profiles act as guiderails, and pads are inserted into the T-slot to enable movement. BENTISM 2PCS SBR20 2200mm Linear Guide Rail Slide Rail 4 PCS SBR20UU Bearing Block. I had considered the UHMW bearings since it simplifies building a cnc but after hearing about its many problems I decided to go with using thk bearings. Sources say for precision, use thk bearings or anything similar. You can make your extrusion rigid by mounting the metal angles along the beam so it wont bend under weight. You would have to solve for the problem when weight is applied to the UHMW bearings and extrusion and the problem of the extrusion bending even in light loads. One major problem that I found is since the UHMW bearings does not use a rigid and sturdy rail like the thk bearings use, it is possible for the aluminum extrusion that the UHMW bearings glides on to bend since extrusion is not as rigid as thk rails. The bearing pads can wear out but the price to replace just the pads is inexpensive. One good application for UHMW bearings is that it is able to withstand harsh environment where liquids might spill on your bearings. Some complained that it takes many tries to get the right tight-fit. However, the problem with tight fitting pads is slower slide speeds which means your motors will have to work harder so don't expect tight fitting pads to be fast in moving along your axis. The same companies that sell the UHMW bearings also sell shims to close-up the distance gap to make the pads fit tighter. The pads slide or glide across the aluminum extrusion. I was informed from sources that it uses pads rather than bearings that roll along the rail. I think I will print more (and bigger ones) in the near future. 80/20 UNIVERSITY One of the many benefits you'll find with 80/20 profiles and parts is its versatility. It is a building system anyone can use to create custom solutions. The plastic with Teflon (actually HDPE) tabs screwed on works just as nicely as the aluminum ones do. 80/20 provides T-slot aluminum profiles, or bars, that have channels used to connect other bars and parts for instance, panels, linear bearings or casters. I still prefer the aluminum ones, but my low cost ABS plastic ones are much affordable and should work fine anyway! The ABS is actually some what slippery and does work by itself despite it not being great. These bearings withstand exposure to dirt, water, impact, and vibration. They’re lined with slippery, durable plastic and have no moving parts. The biggest accomplishment today was printing plastic copies of the 80/20 t-slot linear bearings. Bearings move more accurately than other T-slotted framing linear motion components, such as track rollers, and are often used in automated systems and other applications requiring repetitive motion. They key didn’t print the best, and in addition did not fit in the doorknob for some unknown reason. And I tried my hand at making a copy of my own house key. I also printed two spacers from my solidworks files for my homemade taffy machine. It would certainly fit my trend this year of finishing old abandoned projects (like my xyzzy motor controller). Perhaps I will pick that project up again. I printed 3 more 90 degree corner brackets for my old 1″ extruded aluminum 80/20 brand t-slot that I originally bought to make a rep-rap 3d printer and/or CNC mill. ![]() Today I tried printed out more 3d printed plastic from the library Lulzbot mini.
